Vol. 286 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Slaughter House Standards.

3.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if, having regard to the poor standards of hygiene prevailing in many Dublin slaughtering premises, he will ensure that the retail trade have free access to supplies which are slaughtered and transported under proper conditions outside Dublin.

Responsibility for the supervision and control of arrangements for the supply of meat to the domestic market rests with the local authorities. There is nothing in the legislation which would preclude any local authority from permitting the entry of meat from outside its functional area. As regards the functional area of the Dublin Corporation, the corporation's bye-laws set out the conditions under which meat which has not been inspected and passed by their own veterinary inspectors may be exposed or offered for sale or sold.

Is it true that some slaughterhouses have not been accepted as suitable places for the slaughtering of animals which would be allowed into the EEC?

That is so.
