Vol. 286 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rhodesian Cargo.

32.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if this country gives the UN details in every case of ships suspected of carrying Rhodesian cargo in violation of sanctions; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I assume the Deputy is referring to possible breaches of sanctions occurring in respect of ships loading or unloading at Irish ports or ships chartered from, or in use by, Irish companies. No such case has ever come to the notice of the Government and there is, in fact, no reason to believe that such violations occur. If, however, it was found that a violation or attempted violation had taken place, the Government would act against those responsible for it and ensure against any possible similar occurrence. All information regarding the case would be made available to the sanctions committee of the United Nations Security Council.
