asked the Minister for Finance if he will state in respect of the current tax year the total amount of income tax paid and as a percentage of gross income by a married man with two children, earning a gross income of £2,000, £3,000, £4,000, £5,000, £6,000, £7,000, £8,000 and £9,000, respectively; and if, in respect of each of the tax years 1960, 1965, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1974 and 1975, he will give the same information for the same range of gross incomes corrected for inflation.

The information requested in the first part of the question was given to the Deputy in my reply of November 5th, 1975. The following statement gives the additional information requested. Corresponding figures for the income tax year 1975-76 cannot be computed until the consumer price index figure for mid-February, 1976 becomes available.

Notes:

(1) Gross income is taken as income as computed for income tax purposes, that is, after deduction of superannuation and social welfare contributions and expenses, but before deduction of personal allowances and reliefs.

(2) Gross income for 1965/66 and the later years has been adjusted in each case to take account of the increases in the Consumer Price Index since 1960/61.

(3) The tax figures shown include, where appropriate, sur-tax for years up to and including 1973/74 and tax at the higher rates for the year 1974/75.

(4) The child allowance taken into account is that for children under 11 years.
