Vol. 286 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Data Communications System.

4.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he has any plans to expand the use of data communications for rail and road transport on lines similar to those now used for air transport; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am not at all clear about what the Deputy has in mind but I assume that he is referring to the data communications system used in the airline industry in connection with flight reservations.

The Deputy will appreciate that any question of the introduction of such a system by CIE would be entirely a matter for the board. I understand, however, that CIE do not envisage that, in so far as road and rail transport is concerned, there would be any need for the sophisticated system used by the airlines. Nevertheless, the board are examining the question of data communications in the field of transmission of basic information about the board's activities, for example, automatic vehicle monitoring.

I understand that this type of development is being investigated in relation to the major highways in Europe. Should the procedure be adopted in Central Europe, will we participate fully in it?

I am not sure what the Deputy has in mind. Does he mean that a tally is being taken of cars used on the major highways or that there is a traffic control system by way of data processing?

I meant the traffic control system.

I do not know anything about it but I shall make inquiries into the matter.

From what I have read it appears the matter has progressed further since I put down the question.

As I have told the Deputy, I will make inquiries. From the question it was not clear what the Deputy had in mind.
