Vol. 287 No. 1

Death of Former Taoiseach: Expression of Sympathy.

A Cheann Comhairle, I would like to take the opportunity of paying tribute to the memory of John A. Costello, former Taoiseach, who died during the recess.

John A. Costello was a Member of this House over a period of nearly 40 years and was twice Head of the Government. During those years he was a fine example of the best traditions of this Parliament and in his conduct of public affairs gained the widest respect. He was a model of fairness and charity in his dealings with people.

Before his entry to this House he had, of course, served the State with distinction, as assistant to the Attorney General and, later, as Attorney General. He achieved high distinction too in the practice of the law and in recent years was an honoured figure as father of the Irish Bar, of which he had been a member for over 60 years. Last year he received the freedom of the city of Dublin in appreciation of his contribution to Irish life.

In his public life and as a devoted family man, John A. Costello was an exemplary figure in every respect.

I would ask you, a Cheann Comhairle, to convey to his son, Deputy Declan Costello, Attorney General, and to the other members of his family the sincere sympathy of the Members of this House.

Ar dheis-láimh Dé go raibh a anam.

I have already paid tribute publicly to the memory of Mr. Costello. On behalf of my colleagues I should like to join in the expression of sympathy to Deputy Declan Costello and to the other members of his family.

Deputies rose in their places.
