Vol. 287 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Zirconium Hazard.

9.

asked the Minister for Health if zirconium in deodorants constitutes a hazard to public health; and, if so, if he will arrange to control aerosol and anti-perspirants containing zirconium.

I am advised that there is no evidence that the substance referred to constitutes a hazard to public health.

Any question of the control of cosmetic preparations containing the substance would be primarily a matter for the Minister for Industry and Commerce. I understand that a draft EEC Directive on Cosmetic Products, for which that Minister's Department has taken a lead responsibility, does not include zirconium in the list of substances the use of which it is proposed to prohibit under that directive.
