Vol. 287 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Potato Exports.

1.

asked the Taoiseach the quantity of potatoes exported (a) in 1975 and (b) so far this year.

The total quantity of fresh potatoes exported in the year 1975 was 30,093 metric tons. The statistics are compiled on a monthly basis and, therefore, no data are yet available in respect of 1976.

In view of the present price of potatoes, would the Parliamentary Secretary say whether the Government propose to prevent the further export of potatoes?

The Deputy is entering into an area of policy which is a matter for another Minister.

This is a very serious matter for hundreds of thousands of people in this country who cannot afford to buy potatoes which is part of their staple diet. The price could be reduced——

The Parliamentary Secretary is responsible only for the issuance of the figures. If the Deputy wishes to raise a question, he must put it down. Question No. 2.

The Minister is going to reply.

Is the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries volunteering?

He is not volunteering so the Government are going to let the situation continue.
