Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Pollution Problem.

43.

asked the Minister for Local Government if, in view of the study made in relation to the car of tomorrow, he will indicate the new restraints under consideration as a consequence of the energy crisis, the public outcry against pollution and the motorist's insistence; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The development of the motor vehicle is a continuing subject of study by manufacturing and other interests, and from various aspects including fuel economy and exhaust emissions. Developments in the EEC are aimed at setting standards of manufacture of vehicles and their components. In the light of such developments, I will introduce whatever further measures may be warranted and appropriate from time to time under the provisions of the Road Traffic Acts.

44.

asked the Minister for Local Government if any steps have been taken within the EEC to standardise the measurements of pollution in natural waters.

In order to achieve comparability of results of water quality testing between the various member States, the EEC Commission is aiming at standardisation of sampling and analysis methods and has commenced preliminary studies towards this end.
