Vol. 287 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Disaster Provision Adequacy.

6.

asked the Minister for Local Government the action he proposes to take to ensure that adequate provision is made in each area to deal with a major disaster.

It is not clear what type of disaster the Deputy has in mind, but, in so far as fire outbreaks are concerned it is, of course, a matter for the local fire brigade authority to make reasonable emergency arrangements. As regards other services with which my Department are concerned, local authorities have been advised of the measures to be taken to ensure the speedy restoration of essential services in local emergencies arising from circumstances such as blizzards and exceptionally severe weather conditions. Arrangements have been made whereby the local authorities may call on the assistance of the Army and of local officers of other Government Departments where these are in a position to help, with my Department acting wherever necessary as a central liaison office.

I understand that the Deputy has put down a similar question for answer by the Minister for Health, who will deal with arrangements concerning his Department.

Was attention drawn to a report in a medical magazine where it was suggested that there should be an emergency plan to deal with major disasters and that it should be set up with the local authorities, the Department of Health and health boards?

I have answered the question that Deputy Leonard asked. He did not say what kind of disaster he was talking about. I think the one he is talking about is more for the Minister for Health than for me.
