Vol. 287 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Galway Maps.

10.

Mr. Kitt

asked the Minister for Finance when the Ordnance Survey Office will revise the maps of County Galway.

A survey of Galway city and its immediate hinterland is at present taking place. This survey will take five years approximately to complete and the first published maps are expected to be available at the end of this year. No plans have been drawn up for the survey of the balance of County Galway as the resources of the Ordnance Survey are already fully committed for a number of years ahead on their current mapping programme.

Mr. Kitt

What are the priorities in this regard?

I am not certain what exactly the Deputy means by that. There has been a very considerable, and indeed there is a continuing, expansion of the Ordnance Survey Office staff and field personnel because unfortunately the whole mapping of the country got very much into arrears. Urban areas and areas contiguous to them are those which are in most immediate need of being revised. As soon as these can be completed the other work will get under way.
