Vol. 287 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Second Class Mail.

28.

(Dublin Central) asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the number of items of second class mail handled by his Department in Dublin city and county in the months ended (a) 31st December, 1974 and (b) 31st December, 1975.

The information sought by the Deputy is not available. However, it is estimated that the total numbers of letters, both first class and second class, posted in Dublin city and county in December, 1974, and December, 1975, were 18.5 million and 18.3 million respectively. A large fall in traffic in the Christmas period of December, 1975, was partially offset by heavy postings at the end of the month.

(Dublin Central): Will the Minister not agree that it was due to an overtime ban in December that there was this delay in the postal service at that time? Further, would the Minister not agree that there was a substantial reduction in the number of Christmas cards posted?
