Vol. 287 No. 8

Written Answers. - Free Travel Scheme.

154.

asked the Minister for Education the terms of the scheme for free travel for parents and guardians of children in reformatory and industrial schools.

The terms of the scheme for free travel for parents and guardians of children in care in special schools and residential homes are as follows:

1. Provision is made for one visit per month by two parents or guardians.

2. This facility is normally available only to parents who reside outside a radius of ten miles from the school or home but the managers have discretion in certain cases to defray travel expenses of parents who live within the ten mile limit.

3. Payment is normally related to the cost of travel by public transport. In cases where parents find difficulty in using public transport and other means of transport, for example, taxi, car hire, their travel expenses may be re-imbursed up to the total cost of public transport.

4. Where the school or home is an appreciable distance from a bus/train terminus, the scheme covers the cost of taxi from the terminus to the school or home.
