Vol. 288 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Irish Nautical College.

24.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware of the need to retain the Irish Nautical College at Dún Laoghaire as a training centre; and the action, if any, he intends to take to retain the college at its present location on a permanent basis.

The decision to transfer facilities for nautical education and training from the Irish Nautical College in Dun Laoghaire to the Regional Technical College in Cork was taken in conformity with a recommendation made by a survey team on nautical education which reported in December, 1969. The survey team was representative of the Irish Nautical College, of shipping interests and of interested Government Departments.

The decision has been implemented since 1st September, 1975, and the facilities are now available in the Regional Technical College, Cork, which was planned to accommodate them.

In view of the strength of the fishing industry on the east coast, does the Minister not think that there is a need for such a school in the Dún Laoghaire area?

I could not agree that it is necessary to have two such schools. The school in Cork caters for the needs of the nation in regard to this type of education.
