Vol. 288 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Public Service Employment.

17.

asked the Minister for the Public Service the number of persons employed in the public service under the following headings, not including Army or Gardaí: (a) married women, (b) single women, (c) widows, (d) married men, (e) single men and (f) widowers.

The information sought by the Deputy is as follows:

included at (iv)

The figures do not include (a) 4,242 civil servants, mainly employed on sex-differential scales, and (b) 2,306 teachers, whose marital status it has not been possible, in the time available, to ascertain.

Why did it take the Department so long to obtain the necessary information? How many rates for the job now applying in the public sector are in the categories he mentioned? I am asking this mainly because of the Minister's recent shenanigans in certain public houses he never attended.

The Deputy ought not inject extraneous matters. His question is essentially a statistical one.

If the Deputy will table that question, I will be happy to furnish the information on another occasion as it is not available to me at the moment.

Are there a greater number of rates for the job than there were prior to the introduction of the Government's interpretation of the 1974 Anti-Discrimination Bill?

I would be very happy to give the information to the Deputy. If he would be good enough to table a question, I will acquire the information and furnish it to him.

Is there any reason why the Minister is hedging so much in replying to this question?

The Deputy is engaging in an argument. Question No. 18 is for written reply.

If the Deputy had asked the question originally, I would have the information for him.

I am calling Question No. 19.

With your permission A Cheann Comhairle, the Minister has not replied to my first supplementary: why did the Department take so long——

The Deputy has already asked that question. Question No. 19.

Please, a Cheann Comhairle, could I ask the Minister why it took so long——

The Deputy has already asked that question.

But the Minister did not reply.

The Chair has no control over such matters.

I fully sympathise with the Ceann Comhairle's position but the reality of the situation is this. Two weeks ago the Minister——

Deputy Fitzgerald, please.

The Chair is shielding a man who has disgraced our country and our Government.

I do not want to interrupt Question Time but——

(Interruptions.)
