Vol. 288 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Influenza Epidemic.

5.

asked the Minister for Health if he is aware of the present serious influenza epidemic in Great Britain; the precautions, if any, being taken to prevent an outbreak in this country; and the steps being taken to control any outbreak that may occur here.

I am, of course, aware of the present influenza outbreak in Britain. There is as yet no indication of an outbreak of similar proportions here. The virus believed to be responsible has, however, been isolated in some cases in this country and the possibility of an outbreak here cannot be ruled out.

The practical steps which may be taken to control on outbreak consist primarily of offering vaccination to appropriate health service personnel and to those people who are most at risk from influenza. This action has already been taken.
