Vol. 288 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fisheries Research Vessels.

7.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries the number of research vessels now being operated by the fisheries section of his Department.

The Fisheries Division of my Department operate four boats on fisheries research work consisting of one 85-foot vessel and three smaller vessels.

Are the boats mentioned by the Parliamentary Secretary employed full time in research work?

They are, but the vessels are not of the best kind and in my view should be replaced. The Cú Feasa has been in continuous service since 1959 and is at present awaiting repairs. It is not too satisfactory and I think its serviceable life is coming to an end. However, we are keeping the matter in mind and it is our view that new boats—two sizeable ones if possible—should be provided to carry out this important work in future.

What training and qualifications have the personnel for this type of work?

That would be a separate matter. Question No. 8.
