In their submission to the Minister for Industry and Commerce in December, 1974, the National Consumer Advisory Council recommended the revision of the Hire Purchase Acts and the enactment of new legislation where necessary to protect consumers from abuse by certain traders and financial bodies.
It is my intention to have new legislation on consumer credit but since its form will depend in large measure on the outcome of proposals for a mandatory directive which the EEC Commission are drafting at present, it will not be possible to determine the precise provisions of a Bill until the directive has been finalised.
