Vol. 288 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Educational Facilities.

29.

asked the Minister for Education if he will make a statement on the situation regarding the provision of a post-primary school in Bonnybrook, Coolock, Dublin.

A 350 pupil extension to the principal second level boys and girls school in the area is due for completion during the year. An extension to a nearby girls' secondary school will be completed by about June next, and another girls' secondary school will be tendering for a permanent extension very shortly. Boys' secondary schools in the general area appear to have sufficient accommodation for their needs. The situation is being kept continuously under review, and extensions or new schools will be provided as required.

Were representations made to the Minister?

Yes, by Deputy Belton.

How long ago?

Some months ago.

Does the Minister realise that there are six vacant classrooms in the primary school? Had the Department looked into this situation to see if they could be used either in the vocational or secondary schools? The residents are looking for a secondary school.

I am aware that six classrooms are available. The question of the provision of secondary education in the area is being reviewed at the moment and I will communicate with the Deputy.

In view of the fact that the Minister promised to communicate with Deputy Belton while Deputy Haughey raised the matter here, would the Minister also communicate with Deputy Haughey?

Deputy Haughey picked up the answer I got from the residents' association about two months ago.

Arising from the Minister's reply and the Deputy Minister's interruption, could I have a reply to my question. The Minister promised to correspond with Deputy Belton; would he give a similar promise to Deputy Haughey?

Do I understand that the Deputy is conveying this request on behalf of Deputy Haughey?

I would be glad to send it.

(Interruptions.)
