Vol. 288 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Departmental Staff Vacancies.

13.

andMr. Power asked the Minister for Defence the number of staff vacancies in his Department on 1st January, 1976.

I assume that the Deputies' question does not comprehend vacancies in the Defence Forces.

There were 23 vacancies in civil service posts in my Department on the 1st January, 1976. On the same date there were 30 vacancies in civilian employee posts attached to various units of the Permanent Defence Force.

When will the vacancies be filled?

Things are going well. The following are the vacancies for civil service personnel on 1st January: one technical officer, grade II; four executive officers; nine clerical officers; three clerical assistants—typists; one radio technician, Civil Defence; one attendant, Civil Defence; one messenger; one cleaner, male and two cleaners, female. In the meantime 15 of these vacancies have been filled and action to fill the remaining vacancies is being taken. The following are the vacancies for civilian employees at 1st January: telecommunication technicians, Signal Corps, two; storeman, one; tradesman, Supply and Transport, three; labourer, Supply and Transport, one; third engineer, Naval Transport, Haulbowline, one; able seaman, Naval Transport, Haulbowline, one; joiner, naval dock yard, Haulbowline, one; tradesmen and labourers, Corps of Engineers, 15; barrack foreman of works, one; kitchen and mess helpers, Limerick, one; chef, Curragh Camp, one; caretaker, Arbour Hill, one; caretaker, Waterford, one. I should like to add that 21 of these vacancies have been filled in the meantime and the balance will be filled as necessary and or when suitable personnel become available. In my view that is fairly satisfactory.
