Vol. 288 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mayo Piers.

4.

asked the Minister for Finance the up-to-date position regarding the building of Clare Island pier, County Mayo.

Tenders for the completion of the improvement scheme at Clare Island are under consideration.

Can the Parliamentary Secretary tell the House why this work has not been proceeded with? The contract was under way. Can he give us any indication why the work is not being proceeded with?

Actually the work was commenced but the contractor who had been engaged to do the work discontinued operations and a new tender is under consideration from a suitable contractor and it is hoped to proceed now with the completion of the work.

Do I take it no contractor has yet been selected to complete the work?

As I understand the position, there is a tender under consideration. It would appear that the previous contractor discontinued operations on the particular project and it is now anticipated that work will be resumed by a new contractor in the near future.

Can the Parliamentary Secretary tell us what he means by "the near future"? Will it be this year?

I understand it will, and quite soon.

5.

asked the Minister for Finance when work is likely to commence on Ballyglass pier, County Mayo.

It is hoped——

——for this project very shortly.

A suitable tender has been received and a contract should in fact be placed within the next two weeks.
