Vol. 288 No. 11

Written Answers. - Car Seat Belts.

49.

asked the Minister for Local Government if, in view of the decision of the British House of Commons to introduce legislation for the UK making motor vehicle seat belts compulsory and of the fact that the Republic of Ireland is now almost the only country in Europe not to have such legislation, the Government will as a matter of urgency introduce such a Bill.

As I indicated in reply to a question on 19th February, 1976, I do not at this stage propose to make the wearing of seat belts compulsory. I am, however, keeping the matter under review, including the experience in other countries.
