Vol. 289 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Income Tax Review Commission.

13.

asked the Minister for Finance when a Government review commission on income tax was last set up; and if, in view of his disclosures on income tax inequities in his Budget speech, it is the Government's intention to set up a commission to examine this matter.

The Commission on Income Taxation was set up in February, 1957 and issued its final report in March, 1962.

In pursuit of their aim that the taxation system should be equitable and efficient, the Government have introduced many reforms, including the repeal of many unjustified exemptions, the closure of major loopholes in the tax code, and the determined pursuit of tax evaders. The Government will continue in their programme of taxation reforms and do not consider that the establishment of a special commission is necessary to assist in implementing their policy. Indeed, there is the danger that the establishment of another commission at this stage might well delay reforms, pending the issuing of reports.
