Vol. 289 No. 2

Written Answers. - County Galway Acreages.

32.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state (a) the total area of County Galway (b) the acreage of mountain and bogland and (c) the average acreage of holdings west of the Corrib and in the remainder of the county.

The following is the information requested by the Deputy:

(a) The total area of County Galway, excluding certain lakes, rivers and tideways is 1,467,670 statute acres;

(b) The precise acreage of mountain and bogland is not available. However in the 1970 census of agriculture, some 443,0000 statute acres were recorded as land not on agricultural holdings. This area includes the area of towns, roads, woods and plantations, commonage, bog, marshes, mountain and so on not forming part of agricultural holdings. In addition some 194,000 statute acres of the land on agricultural holdings were recorded as "other land", that is, bogland, grazed and barren mountain, woods and plantations and so on.

(c) The average total area of holdings, one quarter statute acre or more in size, in 1970, the latest year for which the information is available, was 32.3 statute acres in that part of County Galway west of the Corrib and 41.4 statute acres in the rest of the county.
