Vol. 289 No. 2

Written Answers. - Fish Stocks Conservation.

39.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he is aware that new fish species are appearing in the River Thames, England, every year; and, if so, if the Government will ensure that measures taken on this river will be adopted here, in particular with regard to the River Liffey, in order to ensure the conservation of river fish stocks in this country.

I am aware that, arising out of successful measures taken towards the elimination of pollution from the River Thames during the past ten years, some species of fish which had disappeared from the river have since reappeared.

While the extent of pollution in the River Liffey has not at any time reached the level of that which obtained in the Thames, the position has been far from satisfactory. Measures are, however, at present being taken which should substantially improve the situation.
