Vol. 289 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Coast Erosion.

25.

asked the Minister for Finance the proposals before him at present from Kerry County Council in relation to the prevention of coast erosion; and the present position in each case.

The following proposals have been made to the Commissioners of Public Works by the Kerry County Council under the Coast Protection Act, 1963.

(1) Waterville; (2) The Maharees (Fahamore, Magherabeg and Scraggane); (3) Ballyheigue; (4) Yellow Point, Ballybunion; (5) Lohercannon and Kerries; (6) Rossbeigh; (7) Portmagee; (8) Beale Strand, Ballybunion; (9) Kilfenora, (10) Tawlaght, Fenit; (11) Barrow Harbour; (12) Ventry; (13) Kileenagh to Inch; (14) Fermoyle, Cloghan; (15) Ballydavid; (16) Buncrana to Inch.

In the case of (1) Waterville, it is not considered that a scheme under the Act is warranted. In the cases of (2), The Maharees, and (3), Ballyheigue, where large-scale removal of beach material takes place, contributing to coast erosion, it has been indicated to the Kerry County Council that coast protection schemes could not be effective until they prevent this by prohibitory orders. A preliminary examination of No. 4, Yellow Point, Ballybunion, is expected to begin very shortly.

Having regard to very large commitments throughout the country and limited resources, I cannot say at this stage when the other proposals can be taken up.
