Vol. 289 No. 5

Written Answers. - Drainage Schemes.

98.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is satisfied that the Office of Public Works as at present constituted is best suited to the efficient execution of drainage work.

The Commissioners of Public Works have been designated by statute to deal with arterial drainage, that is large scale public works of drainage construction in the greater catchments, for the study, design and execution of which they are specially experienced and equipped. I am not aware of any useful purpose that would be served to this end by changing the present constitution of the Office of Public Works.

99.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will consider moving the river Lee higher up on the priority list for drainage.

As has been said in reply to similar questions, adherence to established priorities is the best way of ensuring an orderly national programme of arterial drainage and, accordingly, it is not proposed to alter the priority lists in the case of the Lee —Tralee—catchment nor, indeed, in the case of any other catchment.

Questions Nos. 100, 101 and 102 withdrawn.
