Vol. 289 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Donegal Schools.

11.

asked the Minister for Education whether additional school furniture has yet been supplied to Carrigart national school, County Donegal.

A grant was sanctioned by my Department in April, 1975, towards the cost of some additional items of furniture for Carrigart national school and I am advised that the furniture was provided in the course of that year. There is no application before my Department at present in relation to furniture for the school.

Is the Minister aware of the situation in two schools where the infant classes have to squat on the floor to do their exercises or their learning? This has been going on for a considerable time.

I have asked one of my inspectors to have a look at the situation and, on receipt of the report, we will take the matter up with the chairman of the board of management.

12.

asked the Minister for Education the cause of the delay in providing a new national school at Currin Termon, County Donegal.

The arrangements for the erection of a new national school at Termon are in the hands of the Commissioners of Public Works and have reached an advanced stage. I understand that the commissioners are at present in touch with the county council regarding the water supply for the school. When whatever problems there are in regard to this matter have been resolved the commissioners will be in a position to invite tenders for the building of the school.

Will the Minister use his influence with the commissioners to get on with this matter? The question of water has already been taken care of. If it is merely a matter of sorting this out between the council and the Office of Public Works, that should not hold up this school which is desperately needed, and has been for a considerable time.

The commissioners hope to get a statement that there are now no further problems on Wednesday, 7th April, when one of the officers calls to the county council office.
