Vol. 290 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Land Commission Office.

27.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will consider moving the Local Land Commission offices from New Ross to Enniscorthy, County Wexford as it would be more central and would permit the present buildings in New Ross to be used for accommodation for pupils attending secondary schools there.

The question of moving the local Land Commission office from New Ross to Enniscorthy will be considered but due to the problems involved it will be some time before a definite decision can be taken.

Is the Minister aware that the present occupation of the offices in New Ross is causing considerable embarrassment to the Augustinian Fathers who own the premises and who require them for school accommodation?

(Cavan): The matter has been referred to the chief inspector in my Department for a report on the entire situation. Perhaps the Deputy will appreciate that it will be necessary to have the proposal taken up with the Board of Works since the question of alternative accommodation will arise as also will the question of transferring at least three members of the staff who are married and own houses in New Ross.

The Minister will appreciate that it would not necessarily be an inconvenience for staff to go ahead with the proposal because they would continue to work in County Wexford.

(Cavan): But there would arise the question of headquarters.

Would the Minister not agree that the purpose of the office is to suit the convenience of the public and the farming community generally and not necessarily the convenience of the staff? New Ross is on one side of a rather large county.

(Cavan): The question is not entirely one of the convenience of staff but involves the changing of headquarters. However, the Deputy may take it that since the matter has been raised here it will be considered fully and expeditiously.
