Vol. 290 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Ballyfermot (Dublin) School Leavers.

13.

asked the Minister for Labour the number of school leavers in Ballyfermot, Dublin unable to obtain employment in the years 1973, 1974 and 1975.

Official statistics do not provide information of the localised kind requested by the Deputy.

Surely there must be some base on which a plan can be formulated for making available jobs for school leavers? As the Minister has indicated no figures are available for Ballyfermot. I can tell him that between the ages of 15 and 20 years there are 6,397 people available every year for employment in that area. Would he try to ascertain the number of school leavers available in that area and also in other areas so that a base can be available for drawing up the plan he told us about last night for school leavers? It appears now from the information given in the House by the Parliamentary Secretary to the Taoiseach that only 83 school leavers are registered for employment and it is on this basis that the Minister will be drawing up a plan——

The Deputy must put relevant supplementary questions, please.

——to relieve this very grave problem confronting the people at the moment. Would the Minister try to ascertain at this stage the number of school leavers available for employment in the Dublin city area and also in the country?

The question refers to Ballyfermot.

The survey is being prepared by the National Manpower Service.

Could the Minister tell us if any details are available?

There are no final details but we will be issuing figures from the National Manpower Service shortly. I hope they will be available in the next month.

The Government, therefore, have no information available about the number of school leavers.

In relation to localised information of a reliable character none of the official statistics provide that information but we have this survey from the National Manpower Service on a national basis which should be available within the next month.

(Interruptions.)
