Vol. 290 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Regional Development Organisations.

18.

asked the Minister for Local Government the present position regarding proposals to grant statutory status to the regional development organisations.

I would refer to the anouncement made recently to the effect that the Government have decided to institute an inquiry involving a fundamental appraisal of the total structure and organisation of the functions of Government at sub-national or regional levels. As the scope of the inquiry will extend to the future status and role of the regional development organisations, it is proposed to await the outcome of the inquiry before deciding on the question of granting statutory status to the organisations. The attention of the organisations has been drawn to the inquiry and it is open to them to make submissions to the inter-departmental committee carrying out the inquiry.

Can the Minister give any indication of when this report is likely to be available?

The inquiry is only commencing. I imagine it will be some time. The gathering of information should start very quickly.
