Vol. 291 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Health Board System.

5.

asked the Minister for Health the plans, if any, in his Department to review the workings of the health boards with a view to effecting any possible improvement.

When introducing the Estimates for the Department of Health on 29th April, I said that I proposed to discuss with the Government the question of setting up machinery for examination of the health board system. I referred to the options for ways to carry out the review and suggested that Deputies might give me their views during the debate on the Estimate on the manner in which such a review should be undertaken. After the conclusion of the Estimates debate, I will discuss the issue with the Government.

Is the Minister satisfied with the way the health boards are working?

In the absence of an alternative system, I am so satisfied. There are only two options: one is a reversion to the county system and the other a different system entirely from that operated by the health boards or by the former county health boards.

Is the Minister aware of any review or proposed changes in the present system, instigated either by himself or as directed by him?

No. As I said in the reply, I was interested in the various comments from Deputies and would be objective in my approach. There were various suggestions as to what type of review board there would be. I would be prepared to listen to the suggestions made during the debate and then come to a conclusion after discussing the matter with the Government.
