Vol. 291 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - National Currency.

28.

asked the Minister for Finance if all notes and coins in the national currency are manufactured here; and, if not, why.

Since May, 1974, legal tender notes are printed at the Central Bank's new currency centre in County Dublin, with the exception of small quantities of higher denomination notes in the existing designs which are still printed abroad. I am advised that it would not be possible to change the printing arrangements for those larger notes at this stage as the bank's printing works is in the process of producing the new-design note series which it is planned to introduce shortly.

I understand that the minting of coin has now commenced at the currency centre and that our requirements will shortly be met from this source, apart from the supply of 50p coins. In view of the relatively small number of coins of that denomination required and its special design features it would not be economical at present to manufacture it here, but the possibility of doing so in the future will be kept under consideration.
