Vol. 293 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Redundant Workers.

30.

asked the Minister for Labour the number of persons made redundant by local authorities and health boards during the past year.

Since the 1st October, 1975, I have been notified by nine local authorities and two health boards of redundancies totalling 53 persons qualified to receive payments under the Redundancy Payments Acts, 1967 to 1973.

Would the Minister not agree that these local authority redundancies at a time of high unemployment should be discouraged? Will he take steps to advise local authorities in that direction?

That is a matter for the local authorities.

Has the Minister no interest in it? Is he showing no concern?

These redundancies were the result of a decrease in the workload and is a matter for the local authorities.

Is the Minister saying that redundancies are a matter for the local authorities and that he, as Minister for Labour, has no responsibility even for encouraging these people?

Management problems of a local authority are matters for that local authority and the Deputy should know that.

Is the Minister continuing with the attitude he has shown to unemployed persons? Is he no longer concerned even if the whole lot are let off?
