asked the Taoiseach the amount of salmon imported during 1976.

In the period January-September, 1976, imports of salmon amounted to 470 metric tons, valued at £742,000.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that there is great concern among fishermen and in the trade at present in regard to these imports? Is he aware that it has been confirmed that imports have come from Canada——

I am sorry to interrupt the Deputy. These are essential questions of policy which the Deputy is now raising and would require to be put to the appropriate Minister.

I have some figures here which might interest the Deputy. This total is preponderantly made up of tinned or preserved salmon. Only a very small fraction of the value or the volume is accounted for by fresh salmon whether chilled or frozen.
