Vol. 294 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - National Museum Extension.

35.

asked the Minister for Education if he will give particulars of the new buildings and the cost, etc. of the National Museum extension.

The premises comprise a recently constructed building at 7-9 Merrion Row and contain an area of 17,872 square feet including a lower ground floor of 4,000 square feet. The entire building is air conditioned and a lift serves all floors.

The premises have been acquired on lease by the Commissioners of Public Works in accordance with the normal procedure for acquiring the use of premises for Government Departments. It is not the practice to give particulars of the costs involved in such cases.

This is the first ever substantial addition to the space of the National Museum since the foundation of the State. It will relieve overcrowding, enable the public display of previously undisplayed items and provide space for occasional exhibitions.
