Vol. 294 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Security Firms.

30.

asked the Minister for Justice if it is proposed to introduce legislation to govern the setting up and operation of security firms; and, if so, when.

This is a matter which I am having examined and I will be arranging for consultations with interested parties. Until I have considered the matter fully, I cannot say whether I will have proposals for legislation.

Arising out of Question No. 30, could the Minister say if he knows the number of security firms operating in the country at present and the size of the operations of these security firms?

No, I have no information as to those details.

Surely the Minister will agree that his Department should have all information on the number of security firms in operation and the extent to which they operate?

I do not know why the Deputy should say that as there is no system of registration involved. The question asked was if there were proposals in this area and I have indicated in my reply that I am having the matter examined. There are no regulations regarding registration.
