Vol. 295 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Military Complex Development.

8.

asked the Minister for Defence the plans for the future development of Gormanston as a modern military complex.

Plans of the kind indicated in the question would be linked to the provision of a new military barracks to replace Cathal Brugha Barracks. As stated in reply to a question by Deputy Seán Moore on 11th November, 1976, a decision has not been made regarding the future of Cathal Brugha Barracks.

To what extent will the complex be developed in Gormanston? When will work be completed on the complex? What number of troops can be housed in the complex when it is completed?

The proposals at present provide for two new billets at Gormanston to accommodate about 200 troops. Contract documents are being prepared for it and tenders will be invited within the next few months.

Can we take it that the complex comprises two new billets in the Gormanston area?

That is the initial proposal.

Are there any further plans for the development of Gormanston?

These plans are the immediate ones it is proposed to implement. There is also a report of a committee which was established to consider this matter and it is at present being examined.

When can we expect the examination to be completed? Surely if they are going ahead with two billets there must be some sort of report available? Can the Taoiseach make the report available to Members of the House in relation to the development of Gormanston?

I will consider that when I see the report.

Question No. 9 postponed.
