Vol. 295 No. 4

Written Answers. - Unemployment Assistance.

50.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare why unemployment assistance was not paid in full to a person (name supplied) in County Offaly.

Payment of unemployment assistance was made to the person concerned on his application of 4th August, 1976, at the maximum weekly rate of £8.55 applicable in his case up to 5th October, 1976. He did not furnish evidence of unemployment in respect of Friday, 8th October, 1976, and he was accordingly entitled only to payment of £7.15 in respect of the period up to 12th October, 1976, when he resumed employment.

51.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare why unemployment assistance is not being paid in full to a person (name supplied) in County Offaly who is married and has seven children.

Unemployment assistance is not being paid in full to the person concerned because, following reinvestigation of his case, a deciding officer reassessed his means at £30 a week attributable to self-employment. On this basis he is only entitled to unemployment assistance at the rate of £0.90 a week, that is the maximum rate of £30.90 a week applicable in his case less £30, the weekly rate of means assessed against him. He has appealed against this decision and the appeals officer dealing with his appeal has asked for a further report from the social welfare officer. That officer has already made one unsuccessful call on applicant who was out of the country at the date of the call. Every effort is being made to have the further inquiries completed, however, and a report furnished as quickly as possible. Immediately this has been done the case will be resubmitted to the appeals officer for decision.

52.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare the amount per head of the working population which the cost of unemployment assistance represents for the latest month for which figures are available.

The amount per head of the working population which the cost of unemployment assistance represents for October, 1976, the latest month for which figures are available, is £3.87.
