Vol. 295 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Assault Victims.

7.

asked the Minister for Justice if he proposes to introduce legislation to ensure that the names of victims of indecent assaults or of rape are not published by the media.

The current general practice in reporting such cases is to withhold the names of the victims and I do not consider it necessary, at this stage, to give legislative force to this practice. I will, however, keep the matter under review.

The Minister is probably aware that in a recent Limerick case the name and address of the woman in question was printed in the papers?

I am not aware of the particular case. I have on file particulars of a particular case but it would appear that it was published by consent and it was not a Limerick case. I am not aware of the case in question. If there was such a case—and I accept what Deputy Collins says—I would deprecate the practice very strongly.
