Vol. 295 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Youth Unemployment Projects.

2.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state, in view of the recent announcement by the EEC of the availability of £7.6 million to member states to combat youth unemployment, the projects that have been submitted for consideration by the EEC; when the projects are expected to commence; and the number of young persons it is hoped to employ under the scheme.

The money in question is intended to be made available from EEC funds during the three-year period 1978-80 for an EEC educational programme consisting mainly of pilot projects on matters relating to preparation for and transition to working life. Arrangements for the selection of projects for this programme, which is due to commence in 1978, have yet to be made, and the occasion for submission of projects for consideration by the EEC will arise only when such arrangements have been made. The schemes are not designed to provide direct employment for young people.
