Vol. 295 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Electric Plug Tops.

7.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is satisfied that sufficient standards of safety are in operation in regard to the sale of plug tops in this country; and if his attention has been drawn to Press reports of danger arising from the use of defective plug tops.

I have seen newspaper reports of a warning issued by the Electro-Technical Council of Ireland in relation to electric plugs of inferior quality. I endorse the council's advice to traders to stock only reputable brands and to the public to buy only such brands. However, I should add that I am not aware of any accidents here from the use of substandard plugs nor of any country which has thought it necessary to introduce a system of compulsory controls on plugs. The plugs manufactured in this country are safe because they are made to recognised safety standards.
