Vol. 295 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Suicide Attempts.

17.

asked the Minister for Health if he will have an investigation carried out on a recent report that there is a high incidence of suicide attempts in the Dublin area among women of 20-25 years of age and of delinquency in men of the same age group.

The matter of trends in regard to delinquency is primarily one for my colleague the Minister for Justice. As far as the reference to the incidence of suicide is concerned I do not consider that the report requires special investigation. Matters of this sort are under constant scrutiny in my Department. I might add that a number of surveys carried out in recent years has shown that the incidence of suicide in Ireland is lower than in other European countries and has, in fact, been declining.
