Vol. 296 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Milltown-Killorglin Road.

33.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will ensure that his Department select the Milltown-Killorglin road this year for grant allocation in view of its extremely dangerous condition and the fact that heavy trucks using it are causing grave anxiety to normal users.

There is no scheme for the improvement of this road before my Department. I am informed, however, that the development of proposals by Kerry County Council is dependent on the completion of satisfactory arrangements by them for the acquisition of the necessary land. As I informed the Deputy in reply to a previous question by him, it is open to the county council, should they wish to do so, to provide for the improvement of this road with the assistance of grants made available to them each year.

The engineers of Kerry County Council tell me that the Department selects the roads and that they are getting no money for this road. Now that many of the Euro trucks are going through here they are getting stuck in each other on the road. Even small trucks cannot pass on part of it. Would the Minister have the matter considered again because the road is cracking up also?

That may be, but more than the road would want to be cracked to do what is suggested here. I understand that one of the things holding up this is the failure of the council to reach agreement with the landowners. I am told that landowners are looking for prices estimated at about £24,500 per acre for land in Killorglin for road widening. If that is true I could never see the road being widened.

That is not true.

That is what the county council tell us.

I shall take it up with them.

I suggest that the Deputy should.
