Vol. 296 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - EEC Student Grants.

15.

Mr. Kitt

asked the Minister for Education the amount of money made available in EEC grants for students attending non-university colleges in third-level education; and if he will give details of the administration, income limits and amount of each grant.

The amount to be made available from the social fund of the EEC for the special programme in technical and technological colleges is estimated at £500,000 for the period 1975-77. There is no income limitation in connection with the grants to students under the special programme; the amount of the grant to each student is £8.30 per week.

Mr. Kitt

Could the Minister explain to me how the funding of these grants takes place?

Does the Deputy mean the grant to each student?

Mr. Kitt

Yes.

I am not sure. I will get the information for the Deputy but the National Manpower Service is involved in picking out the students.

Mr. Kitt

It was represented to me that the vocational committees were paying these grants out of their own scholarship fund and had to wait some time for the Department of Education to pay them the refund.

I do not know what the position is but I will get the information for the Deputy.
