Vol. 296 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Wexford Vocational Schools.

18.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware of the very serious problems that exist in vocational schools under the control of the County Wexford Vocational Education Committee due to lack of accommodation and other facilities, with particular reference to the schools in New Ross, Enniscorthy, Gorey and Adamstown; and the plans he has for bringing these schools up to the minimum required standards in the immediate future.

Following a survey carried out in County Wexford last year it is expected that work will commence this summer on the provision of additional accommodation at the Adamstown and Kilmuckridge schools. Planning has commenced for the provision of additional accommodation also for the schools at New Ross, Enniscorthy and Gorey.

I take it the Minister is aware of the desperate situation that exists in some of those schools at the moment regarding accommodation and facilities especially in New Ross where there is really no accommodation or facilities and where a new school must be provided as a matter of great urgency.

My Department are working on the list of priorities that was given to them by the VEC of the county. New Ross is No. 3 on that list. The first two are, as I said, Adamstown and Kilmuckridge. New Ross will be the next school to be tackled in that area.

Will the Minister say where Enniscorthy comes in that list? It is also an urgent matter.

Enniscorthy is No. 5 on the list.
