Vol. 296 No. 5

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Ennis Garda Station.

16.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will re-establish Ennis Garda station, County Clare, as the divisional headquarters.

The case for a reduction in the size of the Limerick Garda Division has been examined but any decision in the matter must await the evaluation of the reports of the management consultants who are currently carrying out a study of the organisation of the Garda Síochána and related matters.

Is the Minister aware that there was a huge population increase in the town of Ennis recently and that, due to the town's proximity to Shannon International Airport, the change would be justified? Would the Minister consider that that should be taken into account when giving a decision, and would the Minister also consider that Ennis enjoyed this status some years ago?

I am aware that Ennis was formerly a divisional headquarters and I am aware of the strong case that could be made for restoring Ennis as a divisional headquarters, but the final decision will have to wait on the management consultants. The Deputy can be assured that the facts he mentioned will be taken into consideration.
