Vol. 296 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Preservation of Historic Homes.

34.

asked the Minister for Finance the Government's policy regarding the preservation of mansions and very large homes of great historical, architectural, recreational, educational and amenity value to the nation in cases where owners find it impossible to maintain them having regard to large overheads such as rates, taxes, heating and lighting costs and insurance.

The matter is under consideration at present.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware of the grave public concern that many of these mansions and very large homes of great historical, educational and architectural interest could either fall into the hands of non-nationals or be destroyed by the owners in fear of being over-taxed and over-rated? In view of this, would he arrange for a review of Government policy in this whole field?

As I pointed out to the Deputy, the whole matter is under active consideration.
