Vol. 296 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Waterford Schools.

3.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state the one-teacher and two-teacher schools in operation in the city and county of Waterford; and if he will make a statement on their future.

There are no such schools in Waterford city. A list of 18 such schools in the county will be circulated with the Official Report.

Arrangements have been made, with the agreement of the parents, for the amalgamation of the two-teacher schools at Coolnasmear and Kilbrian, and tenders have been invited for the provision of the additional accommodation required at Coolnasmear national school in order that the amalgamation may be effective.

As regards the future of the other schools listed, the circumstances in each case will be considered in the light of my decision, which I announced on 7th February, 1977, namely that amalgamation of small schools will no longer be dictated and that grants will be made available towards the cost of works of necessary improvements to smaller schools.
