Vol. 297 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Drink Advertising.

4.

andMr. Leonard asked the Minister for Health if he is aware of the practice of advertising drink on children's garments; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am so aware. I do not like the practice but I have no reason to believe that it is promoting any significant interest in drink. In any event I have no legal authority to stop the practice.

Mr. Kitt

Can the Parliamentary Secretary tell me if he has any information in regard to the suggestion that the production of these garments is being increased because of the repeated calls for a reduction of drink advertising on television? Does the Parliamentary Secretary agree that the production of these garments on a large scale does more to encourage young people to drink than television advertising?

The Minister does not like the practice but he has no legal power in regard to this type of advertising.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary consider approaching the companies involved in this form of advertising, which is done by ironing transfers onto garments? A number of Dublin companies are involved in this type of advertising.

A code of ethics for television advertising was drawn up after discussions between the Department of Health and the RTE Authority. The use of prints on clothing to advertise drink is objectionable but at present the advertising is confined to brand names only.

Would the Minister consider the introduction of some measure to restrict this practice?

It is not regarded as being a serious problem at present. If the problem became worse I have no doubt that the Minister would consider the matter more fully.

Does the Parliamentary Secretary not agree that this type of advertising is increasing?

Mr. Kitt

Has the Parliamentary Secretary any information in regard to the increased production of these garments?

I have not got any information in regard to the production of these garments but I agree with the Deputy that the sale of these garments appears to be on the increase.
