Vol. 297 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Community Development.

21.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will support the call from the Northern Ireland Council of Social Services to the Commission of the European Communities to make community development in Northern Ireland a European Community priority.

It would not be appropriate for the Minister to make representations to the Commission of the European Communities in this matter, which is within the competence of the British Government. However, should the Commission put forward proposals in this regard in the context of Community social policy the Government would give sympathetic consideration to supporting such proposals.

That is what I asked for. I did not ask that representations be made. I wish the Parliamentary Secretary would interpret my question as I put it down. In the event of such proposals being made we will support these recommendations?

In the event of their being made by the Commission?

We will give sympathetic consideration to that.
